Daniel Hyde - Musical Director

Daniel HydeKnown as much for his outstanding interpretation of the solo repertoire as for his colourful and inventive accompanying, Daniel Hyde is one of England’s most sought-after young organists and conductors. A former Organ Scholar of King's College, Cambridge, from where he graduated in 2003 with First Class Honours in Music, Daniel has been Director of Chapel Music at Jesus College, Cambridge since March 2004.

A student of both Dame Gillian Weir and Nicolas Kynaston, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists at the age of sixteen, and in September 2002 was a concerto finalist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in the RCO Performer of the Year competition, winning Second Prize and the Audience Prize. Whilst at King's, engagements included concerts in London, Paris, Germany, Greece, Canada and Australia, an appearance as a concerto soloist in the Bruges Festival as well as regular recording work on CD, television and radio. As a student, he was grateful to receive financial assistance from the Eric Thompson Trust (Klais Scholarship) and the Worshipful Company of Musicians (Silver Medal).

At Jesus College, Daniel is responsible for training both the choristers and the adults of the College’s two choirs. In addition, he has recently masterminded the fundraising for, and design of, a new organ to be installed at Jesus College during 2007. He is in demand as a tutor in the Music Faculty of Cambridge University and is co-director of Cambridge University Chamber Choir. Recent solo and conducting work has included his debut at the BBC Proms 2006, a recital tour to the USA and concerts at St John’s Smith Square, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, Birmingham and Huddersfield Town Halls. Forthcoming and recent conducting engagements include a performance of Handel’s Messiah with the Britten Sinfonia, Bach’s B Minor Mass in King’s College Chapel with Cambridge University Chamber Choir, and James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words with the BBC Singers .
